Dismantling Integrated Library Systems
I found this article really interesting because I often wonder about ILS. I often use Innovative's Millenium system and it seems like it's pretty old school. It's very simple and I find it pretty slow. I never had thought about the price of this system, but from what I've heard additional applications on it are pretty expensive so maybe this is the best we get? I find the idea of having to "dismantle the ILS in order to rebuild it." This seems like the best choice to me.
How Stuff Works
This article was so easy to understand and I especially liked the graphics. It gave me a much better idea of how the internet works.
Inside the Google Machine
That picture of the globe with the languages of google searches is most interesting. It is crazy to think about how many people are doing google searches at one time. Once I thought about I realized I alone probably do about a dozen searches a day, both on my iPod and on my computer. Google is such an impressive company. I wish I worked somewhere you can have dogs and that takes you skiing! AdSense is brilliant. I had looked into it before when I interned for a consulting firm that only does work for non-profits. I find the related searches hilarious...that poor kid. I have so much respect and awe for them.
When I'm at the computer I throw around Google searches like darts. It's pathetic. I habitually use it to spell-check what I'm working on, or for similar mundane tasks. In 2002, or 2004, whenever that video was filmed, about half of those points of light were mine....
ReplyDeleteAnd now that the Kulp household is averaging around 65% bike-riding ability, I can free some time up to compete with Google. Or to track down better pho.
